Foggy Bottom got its name during the 19th century when smoke from neighborhood factories and the swampy air of the low ground combined to produce a permanent fog. With industry out of the area, fog is no longer a problem at Foggy Bottom.
The Foggy Bottom area located between Lafayette Square and Georgetown is home to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Watergate Complex, George Washington University, the State Department, and the National Academy of Sciences.
