The city of Hagerstown is located about an hour and a half northwest of Washington DC, in the Great Appalachian Valley. Nicknamed 'Hub City', it sits at the intersection of the I-81 and I-70.
During the Civil War Hagerstown became a border town with the valley in which it is situated serving as route for troop movements between Virginia and Pennsylvania. The Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle the history of the Civil War, took place just south of town. Antietam National Battlefield offers visitors an opportunity to experience this important event in American history with a museum and multi-media displays.
Other historical and educational points of interest in Hagerstown include the Hager House built in 1739 by the town's founder, the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.
The Hagerstown area also offers numerous golf courses, miles of scenic bicycling and hiking trails, is home to the Hagerstown Speedway and is in close vicinity to Whitetail Ski Resort.
Most hotels and motels in Hagerstown are located along Dual Highway (Highway 40) in the eastern part of town, but additional accommodation options to be found north of town near the Hagerstown Regional Airport and in nearby Williamsport.
